In July 2028, Norwegian marine engineering company Kongsberg Maritime released AquaWelder, an autonomous underwater welding robot. Weighing approximately 2.5 tons, the robot can autonomously complete oil and gas pipeline welding at depths of up to 3,000 meters, meeting the DNV-OS-F101 standard -- the most stringent welding quality specification in the offshore oil and gas industry.

AquaWelder uses friction stir welding technology rather than traditional arc welding. Friction stir welding generates frictional heat at metal joint surfaces through a high-speed rotating tool head, bringing metal to a plastic state before joining under pressure. The entire process requires no arc or shielding gas -- a significant advantage in underwater environments where arc welding requires complex gas shielding enclosures.

Kongsberg Maritime's Director of Maritime Robotics Erik Halvorsen said: "Deep-sea welding has always been one of the most dangerous industrial operations. A saturation diver working at 300 meters depth costs over $100,000 per day and faces enormous health risks. AquaWelder aims to fundamentally change that equation."

AquaWelder's autonomous control system is based on the fusion of underwater acoustic positioning and visual recognition. After reaching the welding location, the robot first uses a structured light scanner to make 3D measurements of the joint, then automatically adjusts welding parameters and paths based on measurement data. All welding process data -- temperature curves, pressure, welding speed -- is recorded in real time for subsequent quality auditing.

The first AquaWelders will be deployed in Q4 2028 at Equinor's Johan Sverdrup field in the North Sea. Kongsberg Maritime has received 12 orders from clients including Shell, TotalEnergies, and Petrobras. Each AquaWelder is priced at approximately $4.5 million.
