On July 24, 2028, Pfizer announced the full deployment of ChemiBot autonomous chemistry synthesis robot swarm at its Pearl River research campus in New York. Developed by Emerald Cloud Lab, the system consists of 12 independent synthesis robot units capable of autonomously planning synthesis routes, operating chemical reactions, purifying products, and conducting quality verification based on molecular structures output by AI drug design systems.

Each ChemiBot synthesis unit is equipped with a six-axis robotic arm, micro-reactor array, high-performance liquid chromatography system, and mass spectrometer. The robot units can perform over 200 common organic chemistry reactions, covering approximately 85% of the synthetic steps commonly used in medicinal chemistry, including Suzuki coupling, amide bond formation, and protecting group removal.

Pfizer's Global R&D President Mikael Dolsten said at the press event: "One of the most time-consuming steps in drug development is converting AI-designed virtual molecules into actual compounds. ChemiBot compresses this process from weeks to 48 hours, meaning our chemists can evaluate in a week what would previously have taken a month."

In Pfizer's internal benchmark tests, ChemiBot achieved a 96% success rate in synthesis reproducibility tests of 100 known drug molecules. For AI-designed novel candidates, ChemiBot can autonomously design synthesis routes with approximately 78% success rate; the remaining 22% require human chemist assistance.

The deployment has sparked discussion about the career prospects of chemists. Pfizer emphasizes that ChemiBot will not replace chemists but free them from repetitive synthesis work to focus on more creative tasks like designing entirely new chemical reactions and evaluating AI-generated molecular structures. However, an American Chemical Society survey found 63% of medicinal chemists are cautiously concerned.
