AI Grief Counseling Service GriefCompass Launches: 24/7 Emotional Support for Bereaved Raises Ethical Questions

UK mental health tech company GriefCompass launches AI grief counseling service providing round-the-clock emotional support for the bereaved, already piloted in NHS trusts, sparking debate about whether AI should handle deep emotional trauma.

AI Grief Counseling Service GriefCompass Launches: 24/7 Emotional Support for Bereaved Raises Ethical Questions

On July 20, 2028, UK mental health technology company GriefCompass officially launched an AI grief counseling service for bereaved individuals. The service provides 24/7 emotional support, grief stage education, and coping strategy guidance through text and voice conversations for users experiencing the loss of a loved one.

GriefCompass's AI system has been specifically trained in grief psychology, based on the Kubler-Ross five-stage grief model and continuing bonds theory, enabling it to identify the user's grief stage and provide corresponding support strategies. The system includes a crisis referral function that automatically connects to a live crisis intervention hotline when suicidal ideation is detected.

The service has been piloted in three NHS trusts in England. Preliminary data shows that 85% of users found GriefCompass helped them better understand their grief reactions, and 72% reported reduced feelings of isolation caused by having no one to talk to during late-night hours.

However, the British Psychological Society has questioned the service. Clinical psychologist Sarah Blackmore wrote in The Guardian: "Grief is not a symptom to be managed -- it is one of humanity's deepest emotional experiences. Using algorithms to process bereavement is essentially instrumentalizing irreducible human experience."
